Murgsee area

The Murgsee area in the Sardona Tectonic Arena offers impressive geological formations and extensive pine forests. The landscape was heavily shaped by glaciers and is a UNESCO spot.

The fracture from the Mürtschenfurggel can be traced further to the Murgseefurggel and the Widersteinerfurggel. There, massive Verrucano rocks (west) were pushed against softer, more dispersed Verrucano rocks. The massive Verrucano rocks in the area of the Murg lakes were strongly shaped and polished by the glaciers. In addition to moorland areas, the northernmost Central European occurrences of extensive Swiss stone pine stands developed.
